Fauré:  Masques et bergamasques, Op. 112

Hanson:  Concerto for Organ, Harp and Strings, Op. 22, No. 3

Jonathan Moyer, organ

Beethoven:  Symphony No. 1 in C

Every great musical voice emerges through becoming. Elegant refinement gives way to bold originality as this program traces composers finding and redefining their artistic identities. Gabriel Fauré’s Masques et bergamasques adroitly revives the grace of the Baroque dance suite, while Howard Hanson’s richly textured Concerto for Organ, Harp and Strings reveals a distinctly American lyricism. World-renowned organist Jonathan Moyer—recognized for performances spanning Renaissance masterpieces to contemporary works—brings both brilliance and color to Hanson’s seldom-heard concerto. The evening concludes with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1, where the young composer honors the Classical tradition even as he begins to reshape it forever.

Bizet:  Symphony No. 1 in C Major

Brahms:  Violin Concerto

Amy Lee, violin

Two youthful masterpieces reveal extraordinary talent on the rise. Written before either composer reached full artistic maturity, Georges Bizet’s radiant Symphony in C and Johannes Brahms’s monumental Violin Concerto each demonstrate remarkable confidence, craftsmanship, and emotional depth. Joining the orchestra is violinist Amy Lee, Professor at Oberlin Conservatory and former Associate Concertmaster of The Cleveland Orchestra. Her gorgeous sound, commanding technique and musical insight make her an ideal interpreter of Brahms’ towering concerto. Together, these works celebrate the moment gifted composers ascend to artistic greatness.
