Every great musical voice emerges through becoming. Elegant refinement gives way to bold originality as this program traces composers finding and redefining their artistic identities. Gabriel Fauré’s Masques et bergamasques adroitly revives the grace of the Baroque dance suite, while Howard Hanson’s richly textured Concerto for Organ, Harp and Strings reveals a distinctly American lyricism. World-renowned organist Jonathan Moyer—recognized for performances spanning Renaissance masterpieces to contemporary works—brings both brilliance and color to Hanson’s seldom-heard concerto. The evening concludes with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1, where the young composer honors the Classical tradition even as he begins to reshape it forever.
