Brouwer: The Art of Sailing at Dawn

Copland: Music for the Theatre

Beethoven: Concerto for Violin in D Major, Op. 61

We embark on an emotional journey that begins on Lake Erie at sunrise, in Cleveland composer Margaret Brouwer’s peaceful tone poem The Art of Sailing at Dawn.  Then flow to the jazzy undercurrent of Music for the Theatre, an early work by Aaron Copland, written during the Roaring Twenties. Finally, we arrive at the “King of Violin Concertos,” with David McCarroll, Concertmaster of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, as soloist in Beethoven’s monumental 1806 Violin Concerto, an unappreciated sleeper during the composer’s lifetime that became one of the most beloved works ever written for violin. Join us and immerse yourself in a vast musical voyage navigated via the baton of maestro Daniel Meyer.

Janáček: Suite for Strings

Kabalevsky: Piano Concerto No. 4, Op. 99 “Prague”

Mozart: Symphony No. 38 in D Major, K. 504 “Prague”

A musical dialogue with an Eastern European flair inspires our spring concert. 1999 Cleveland International Piano Competition winner and 2001 Van Cliburn Silver Medalist Antonio Pompa-Baldi solos with BlueWater in Kabalevsky’s Concerto No. 4, “Prague,” with its nod to Bohemian sensibilities and its many quotes from Czech folk music.

Slavic spirit continues with Mozart’s inventive Symphony No. 38 in D Major, “Prague.” Czech composer Leoš Janáček’s Suite for Strings opens this intriguing, rewarding evening as we explore the 23-year-old’s earliest composition for large ensemble.

Canteloube: Songs of the Auvergne

Haydn: Symphony No. 99 in E-Flat Major

Cleveland Heights native soprano Midori Marsh returns to her home church to perform with BlueWater in Canteloube’s magical Songs of the Auvergne, with its lush melodies from the heart of rural France. Ms. Marsh has won considerable acclaim with the Canadian Opera Company, performing in major roles across the country, as well as appearing as soloist in orchestral works.  The musical conversation begins in the American countryside with Farm Journal by Douglas Moore, a piece bursting with humor, wit and down-home charm. We wrap up the dialogue with Haydn’s Symphony No. 99 in E-flat Major, brimming with evocative folk-inspired tunes, rhythms, and dances. Join us and savor a pastoral respite.
